Middle School Program

Updated Wednesday March 30, 2016 by Babe Ruth Baseball of Stamford Inc..

The Stamford Middle School baseball program is a cooperative effort between Stamford Babe Ruth and the Stamford Public School System / Board of Education

  • Stamford Babe Ruth provides the governance and administration, sets prices, arranges fields, controls player registration, eligibility and insurance, assigns umpires, and establishes and maintains the game schedule.
  • The individual schools independently conduct team/player tryouts and in most cases provide the coaches, who are responsible for all on-field matters, as well as communication with their team’s respective players, for ensuring that all rostered players are eligible, and that all players have paid their participation fee.
  • In most cases, players must attend the school or live in the district of the school in order to be eligible, however, Babe Ruth reserves the right, at its sole discretion,  to place players who are cut from their school team onto other teams to retain competitive balance and ensure program viability at smaller schools.
  • The Middle School Baseball program is intended in some respects to mirror the High School programs and prepare our Middle School-aged players for the structure and format of High School baseball. For that reason, we have designed the program to include the following features:
    • ‚ÄčThe season runs from early April through Mid May and during that time, there are no other Babe Ruth programs in session
    • Teams are limited to a 15-man roster. Schools with more than 15 eligible players must cut players to get down to 15.  Unlike our Spring and Fall leagues, not all players who try out for a Middle School team make a team
    • There is no "must play" rule  - all playing time is at the coach's  discretion
    • All rained-out games are rescheduled and made up

The Middle School program is currently a wood bat league, and features a 10 game schedule that goes from tryouts in late March through to the playoffs and Championship in Mid-May.  In addition, the following rules apply for 2016:

  • A mandatory Extra Hitter will be used in 2016 to assist coaches in getting more players into each game.
  • Games are played at local fields including a few night games for each team at Cubeta Stadium at Sclazi Park under the lights.
  • Players must be of Babe Ruth age (at least 13 years of age as of May 1 of this year).
